SUPERSKILLZ WAS NOT SKILLED ENOUGH...AHUH

It's too bad I missed it.

I haven't been to the last two, but I've heard the hype has cooled off since 2004. I'm still waiting to hear back from Geoff what he thought.

One of the projects I'm working on got a little bit of press coverage. They aren't official press releases, only speculation. I'm legally not allowed to comment on it, but here are some links.

Amazon Post Holiday Party

Instead of going to Superskillz in toronto, I went to my company's post holiday party. You see, Christmas is a busy time for Amazon. We sold over 110 million items over the holiday season and there are a lot of systems that need to be kept up. That's why we celebrate after Christmas is over.

This year's theme was Vegas. They had a bunch of gambling tables which included black jack, 5 card stud, craps, and some others. They even had a wedding chapel where 5 couples got married. I'm not sure I would want to get married at a company party...unless my only friends were people who worked with me, then it's like a free wedding.

The party was huge, there were over a thousand people there. The gambling tables were packed so I waited till it died down a bit. I doubled my "money" in twenty minutes at the blackjack table. I said "money" because they gave us fake money to use towards raffle tickets. I never win those so I won't mention the nice prizes. I had a good time. It was my first company party. It looks like the company put a lot into it.

OUCH

I've begun contacting schools for OUCH (University Hip Hop dance competition). I had a different approach at the beginning of the month. I wanted to find a "home school" that would help with the organization. That turned out to be the wrong way to do it. I'll keep the organization external to the schools so they can just worry about making dope routines. This production is operating under 5th Element Entertainment. I know it's a Canadian company, so I'm not sure what Uncle Sam will think.

By dumb luck, I've also found a non-profit organization that does mentoring/coaching for minority students who wish to pursue a career in technology. I don't know, but that sounds right for me. As I previously reported, I had scheduling issues with the previous mentorship I pursued. That's why I did not follow that path. This one should be interesting. I'll keep you updated.

Re: Super Skills

This year, 5th Element is deeply entrenched in superskillz. DJ Jro is providing the music and pretty much every member of 5th Element is perfoming: singers, beatboxers, DJs, and dancers. Unfortunately, I'm in Seattle so I have to miss the event.

hostel

I was asked for my ID when I went to watch this movie...and for good reason. I'm not sure 'R' is a proper rating for this movie. This movie deserves another class of ratings. I propose 'WTF' (if you don't know, ask somebody).

Eventhough I laughed through the gory parts of the movie, Hostel still pushed my limits. I have fairly big limits too. I used to watch "The Operation" on The Learning Channel while eating dinner.

So if you have a weak stomach, this movie is a good test to see if you still have a weak stomach.

Homelessness 101

Yesterday, I attended some training for volunteering with the homeless. As you might recall from my previous posts, I want to start a foundation that raises money for the homeless.

In order to start something like this, I think the first step would be to volunteer. The program I'll be volunteering for is for young homeless people.

The training involved reminders of common sense and it visited some common sterotypes of homelessness. One of the things that I didn't know was that there are a disproportionate amount of gay and lesbian homeless youth. It never occured to me, but I guess it makes sense. Parents become ashamed of their children and simply kick them out on the streets.

Another interesting aspect of the training was that some homeless girls act and dress more masculine. This is not because they are lesbian, but because it doesn't make them targets for sexual predators. I've never heard of that before, but it's a smart adaptation to street life.

Friday will be my first day in volunteering. I'll let you know how it goes.

Re: Ms. Boland

This is truly unfortunate. I can't count the number of times she's caught me eating in the library or kicking me out for talking too loud.

She was just trying to teach me some goodness, discipline, and knowledge.

Ms. Boland

Ms. Boland passed away last Saturday. There was a memorial at SMC this evening. It was good seeing a lot of old faces, especially the teachers and stuff.

hey

Well, well G-boy

Judging by your use of vocabulary (or lack thereof) , you seem to be fresh off your boat. It's too bad you're hating on Trivial Pursuit; must be making you jealous since you probably had nothing but rocks to play with as a child.

Tell you what... give me your mailing address and I'll be sure to also send you a game. It's on me. If you really wanted to be cool like Ray and have a game too, all you had to do was ask. It is a new year, after all.

Re: Reality Check

That's disrespectful. All gifts are valuable and meaningful regardless of the price.

Besides, board games aren't cheap and this one's good too.

cancelled flight

I'm back in Seattle, but not without struggle.

My flight from Toronto to Seattle had a connection in Denver. Once I touched down in Denver, I found out that my connecting flight to Seattle was delayed by six hours. That really sucked. Luckily, I found a fellow amazonian who was in the same boat. Unluckily, five minutes later, the flight to Seattle was cancelled.

I haven't had the experience of a cancelled flight before. I was like a freshman entering an athletic high school.

We immediately found a customer service rep. They confirmed us on another flight...for Wednesday! Today is Monday! What about our bags? They'll arrive in Seattle before us with a chance of getting lost in the shuffle. Even worse, United Airlines said they would not provide us with a hotel to stink up for the next couple of days. Without luggage and toiletries, the smell will start to become epic.

We wouldn't have a chance to freshen up too much because we would be waiting at the airport in standby for the next available flight.

Standby....

That's what Simon (other amazonian) and I did. We were smarter than the average traveller. While other travellers went on standby for the next flight only, we went on standby for the next three flights. That way, we'd be ahead of everyone else if the first flight was full.

That's exactly what happened. The caveat is that we had to fly through San Francisco and wait 5 hours before heading to Seattle. In San Francisco, I found a section of chairs that were as flat as possible. I lied down, hugged my backpack so no one would steal my goodies in my slumber, and knocked out for a couple of hours.

I woke up worrying about my luggage. The luggage represented the generosity of friends and family during Christmas and my birthday. I would be no less than devastated if I lost it.

I didn't. Thank god.

Overall, it wasn't a pleasant experience. I was 12 hours late, but I guess that's better than two days.

One bright spot was that I finished a book that Leen and Teo gave me. It's called Tuesday's with Morrie. It's a touching story about a student and his incredible mentor during the mentor's last days on earth.

Check it out. Perhaps it will help you through your next flight cancellation.

See you soon

Didn't get a chance to meet up with you during the break...but I'll see you in a couple of weeks!

Happy New Year

I'm still in Toronto, but I'm heading back to the real world tomorrow. It's been a fun trip. I got to see a lot of people and I've got a lot of much needed rest.

There will be some transformation to this front page over the next couple of weeks. I'll be starting separate blogs for each of my projects so I can keep track of my progress.

I have an ambitious list of TODOs for 2006. Hopefully, I can knock em all off.
