Jipped...

Hundreds of John Legend fans...including myself and the Russion Queen were treated to a classis no-show by the G.O.O.D. artist...

However, Alicia was good...

Whatever...we saw him the night before!

Hanz: You don't even know the things that I've flipped off of...and GAINERS MIND YOU! here's a list

rocks
big ass rocks
big ass cliffs
chairs
some ledge at Queens
walls
people
over people
diving boards
etc...

"yo there's beatstreet let's surf!"

still a fan

I'd still like to see Vince make it to the first round of the playoffs but get smoked by Miami.

Quote of the day:
"It's not about money, that's why I gave up the $6 million"

Alonzo Mourning commenting on how he took $10 million instead of $16 million to NOT play in Toronto.

Blackout

I got some pretty good front row seats, except for this one spotlight that pointed straight in my eye...

This one girl in my class came for the UW Club performance parts but left after the Dance Pak. She totally missed out on Team Ryouko!

Re: Geoff

Why do you like Geoff so much and who told you that he is the best back spinner of Toronto. For your information Geoff can't even do a single flip, hello...

blackout

There was an event called "Blackout" today which was held at the Student Life Center in Waterloo. It's called "Blackout" because they blocked out all of the natural light and setup a big stage with concert type lighting.

This event also marked the end of my UW Hip Hop career. I've been running the club for about 2 years now so I'm ready to close that chapter of my life. It was fun and it was probably the biggest crowd the club has ever performed in front of.

Team Ryouko was the main event. Their high flying stunts and showmanship proved that they earned the headline.

That is my first cousin down in one of the previous posts. I haven't seen her in a really long time. It's glad she contacted me. It's nice to hear from family you haven't seen in a while.
It's also interesting what people do with these pictures.

OK back to work....

GOOD JOB UW HIP HOP

Hey Ray! I watched you guys perform at the SLC earlier today for the UW Blackout event and just wanted to drop by to say good job to all of you guys. Definitely entertaining. Overall, it was an awesome event, Team Ryouko most definitely rocked! Take care. Btw, good luck with exams.

good friday

Hi all,

sorry it's been a week since my last entry. I've been feeling under the weather and tired. I feel much better now though and I only have four more days of classes left in my undergraduate career.

I'm home in Toronto and I'm glad to be back. I had such a good night sleep. There's really nothing like your own bed.

As you know, today is good friday. It's the holiest weekend of the year. Every year, I realize how petty my problems are and how embarassingly human I am. I wish I could change more, but you know what geeks say, "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is inertial".

I've also been working on my graphics project. Dy said she had no idea what I was talking about on my previous graphics post. So I'll try to be more clear.

For example I've implemented motion blur. You've probably seen an effect like that in Photoshop or something. The general motion blur problem is pretty difficult. There are a lot of factors to consider, but Ray tracing makes the problem generally simple. You basically take snapshots of a scene at different time intervals and average out the results. Below is an example.

I wish I could show better examples, but that's next week's task.

Another graphics related thing is antialiasing. You've probably heard the word somewhere. Antialiasing removes aliasing. Great, thanks Ray. Aliasing means to "masquerade as". For example, an aliased image has many guesses on what it should look like. Therefore, it looks choppy and unclear. An antialiased image is more smart about how an image should look. It does this by paying more attention to detail. Here's an example. The first one is highly aliased, the second one is antialiased

OK that's enough graphics for today. I'm going to bed.

ray tracer

A ray tracer is a form of graphics backwards rendering. When you think about rendering an image, you may think of rendering each of the elements in the image. That's called forward rendering. Ray tracing is backward rendering. What that means is that you shoot light rays from your eyes and see what it hits. If it hits something, then draw it.

That's my graphics project. So far, I've got reflection, refraction, some modelling, and hierarchical transformations done. Below is a sample picture:

It's a simple scene, but it's definitely not simple to set up. There is some hardcore math involved in this picture. You'll notice a superman logo. This is not the regular superman logo. It's the kingdom come superman logo. I had to analyze it mathematically in order to model it. It may not be suprising, but it's very symmetric in terms of slope and proportion. I'm eventually turning it into a 3D logo.

You will also notice some oddly scaled spheres. These demonstrate transformations, reflection, and refraction.

You can also see a bug. You can see a circular shadow on the bottom plane. I'm not so sure it should be there. Ah well....

i was able to watched a couple of videos here...check out long haired guy.

campus day

Today was Campus Day at the University of Waterloo. Campus Day is a day for high school students to check out the University and talk to faculty staff and students. Five years ago, I was that high school student. So I thought it would be a good idea to volunteer and talk to the students about my experiences. Naturally, I volunteered at the Math/Computer Science/Bioinformatics booth. Here's a picture of the shirt student volunteers get.

Pink? Yeah Pink. Mathies at waterloo have this pink tie thing going on...long story I guess. Also, some schools or faculties have cool mascots/symbols like lions/tigers etc. Our symbol is the natural log (a tree log). I guess you have to know a bit of math to get it.

Anyway, here's a list of observations from today:
  • There weren't as many people there, particularly at the Computer Science booth or talks. When I was there as a high school student, I remember it being really packed. There were, however, more people at the Software Engineering booth.
  • I had some really good conversations with a few kids and parents. They really drilled me, but I was happy to answer with all my experiences.
  • I got to hang out with some profs which I never do. That was interesting. I also got to talk with parents/students with them. I found that they never had direct answers for questions. They danced around and often brought up theory and junk. So I'd often have to interrupt with my answer before these parents and kids fall asleep
  • I had a good time and I'm glad I got a chance to give back a little

Other math notes: March 14 has two significant aspects: it was Pi day and "6 years 9 months". I'll let you figure those out.

Hip hop charity event

Today, I performed with the UW Hip Hop club for a charity event. The charity was called ROOF. It supports the homeless. The event was also a semiformal which we didn't know about for sure until we got there. Of course, we're dressed pretty ghetto compared to ties and suits. Ah well, I've done that before. You feel a little silly, but it's OK.

The venue was at RIM Park. We had to take a school bus there with some loud ass first years. Man they were annoying. The performance went OK. People basically surrrounded us in a semi circle and watched our freak show.

One interesting note is that one of the songs we do is Ludacris' Number one spot which uses an Austin Powers instrumental and there was a dude dressed like Austin Powers there.

Anyway, I added some pics, but not of the actual performance.

Oh ok. cool. That's ok with me. Thanks.

I know the site has been quiet. That's why my new design will solve that problem. The new site should be up by the time I graduate which is around June. For now, I just have to concentrate on school.

By the way, did you notice on www.vybedance.com/spotlight2005 that the banner features me? It's an evolution silhouette with my picture as the state of evolution. haha.. i need a new picture.

It was me

This site was quiet for the past 5 days. I got bored so I posted Jeff's picture. ... It certainly was not my intention to make confusion.

re: Did I Ever Learned from my Mistakes?

Who is great hall?

I don't know if Great Hall is Jeff Wong or not. The grammar doesn't sound like him or maybe he's just trying to throw us off.

On another note, hits for this website this month have skyrocketed for unknown reasons.

viruses

The last bad one I had was msblast. I got it while on the university's residence network. It's the one that automatically distributes itself and restarts your computer, among other things.
I didn't sleep much last night (less than one hour). It was mostly due to my hectic school schedule over the past month. In the past three weeks, I've had four midterms and 3 assignments due. Today, my ray tracer for my graphics project was due. I didn't have as much time to work on it because there were other higher priority things to do. Basically, I tried to do a three week project in a weekend. I didn't get it all, but I did OK. I think it's time to sleep.
The rest of the term, however, should not be so crazy. Today I decided to take a break and not do any homework. Lawrence, Waterloo's new VP Internal, hooked up some tickets to watch Russell Pieters at our on campus club, Fed Hall.

There was a rumour that a UW hip hop member was supposed to open for him, but that didn't happen. In any case, Russell was joined by two other of his tour mates: George Funk and Jay Knight. Highlights from each:
  • Funk: he showed us his growing belly and why he had to get rid of his pager
  • Jay: He did an imitation of those Indian dances on TV (you know you watch them) wearing African gear
  • Russell: this guy's a polished vet who interacts well with the crowd. He was a bit under the weather which led to some uncomfortable pauses. He made my cheeks hurt though

    • Anyways, time to sleep. Thanks again for the others who have put their input on their computer security issues.

mediapass

This mediapass crap is making me angry. I have tried to remove it and it keeps reinstalling itelf. it takes over my regedit and msconfig.

MediaPass- A Nasty Bugger!!

hey you guys...sorry to see that some of you, like myself, have come upon this nasty nasty varmant. it is not easy to get rid of...it takes over everything including MSConfig. it magically kept rechecking the box for the mediapass startup entry every single time i'd uncheck it. BASTARDS! wanted to let y'all know to look for another "side-kick" file that was created at the same time as the mediapass files on my computer. it...i believe...was titled "salm.exe" and it was located in my C:/Temp folder. as another poster said, i found the mediapass files in C:/Program Files/MediaPass. there were three files in that folder...MediaPass.exe, MediaPassX.exe and *.dll. i'm sorry, i can't remember the name of the dll. if you think you've gotten rid of mediapass but you're still experiencing system drain problems...check to see if the bugger has reinstalled itself again. also check for the "salm.exe" program...i hope i'm remembering that file name correctly. if you know what day/date that MediaPass.exe was created/modified...run an explorer search using that criteria and see what other stuff was created/modified around the time of MediaPass's "takeover". babble babble babble...sorry i'm rambling on here. i sincerely hope this information helps someone with this nasty. if any of y'all have plans to pursue these guys somehow...give me a shout. i'd be more than happy to help see that these buggers get their "due". most sincerely...tst

It's hard to keep track of all these new viruses and threats. I've gotten viruses before and I'm pretty careful.

Thanks a lot for everyones advice for Check. Now if you could advise me on how to build an amazing ray tracer for my graphics project, that would be splendid.

RE: Mediapass

Just did a google search for mediapass and found this site. It appears that mediapass is malware that is supposed to report your inet habbits. I have a couple of 2K3 terminal servers that are infected with this crap. It doesn't look like anyone has any pattern files out yet. This is nasty stuff...pegging the processor utilization and hogging memory.

Re: Mediapass.exe

This file is a new variant of a backdoor tracker, and uses quite a deal of bandwidth, i feel it is constantly sending info back to the source from your computer.

I'm not sure what that is either, but you seem to be prone to infecting your computer.

Just download a virus scanner. I use a free one that doesn't take much memory: AVG
