Sage Francis
I went to go see Sage Francis last night. Sage Francis is an underground rapper with incredible lyrics. He actually said "underground" or "indie" is a misnomer. What it really means is "minor league". That is, the artist isn't selling enough units.
He's also white. The event reminded me of a Dave Chappelle episode. Lots of white people who dance and act like the people in the Chappelle show.
Anyway, I arrived too early. I had to endure a long set of mediocre opening acts. They were OK, but I thought it was a little weird seeing a dude perform who looks like one of my professors from Waterloo.
The main event was entertaining, but the opening acts kinda killed the night a bit.
Sage Francis' lyrics were dope and his delivery was tight. Besides that he also joked around a lot. For example, he danced like a dooofus. Right click to download
Also, a dude came to the side of the stage, interrupted Sage, and begged Sage to autograph a sign. The dude was being annoying, so Sage took the sign and ate it. Actually, he just chewed up the sign, drank some water with the sign in his mouth, then spit it back at the dude. It sounds a little harsh, but it was good for the entertainment value.
Near the end of his set, he did a parody song. It was called "I like 99 rappers but Jay-Z ain't one". I took a video with my digi cam. It's horrible quality, but at least it's something.Right click to download

Convenant Awards
Exciting news...my band won a Convenant Award for Best Rock Album of the Year. My friend Nasri won too for best Hip Hop Song of the year but he wasn't there to accept the award. Lots of technical glitches throughout the show. Would have looked really ghetto on television so I'm glad it wasn't televised. There were a lot of good acts.

my place
I put up some pictures of my new place. You can check them out in the Pics section. I put them there for my family and friends to see. I'm not sure it's a good idea to post pictures of my place to the world, but I've done it before and all I've gotten was "you have a messy room".
Tonight, I'm going to see Sage Francis perform. He's a dope underground MC. I don't know if he's ever came to Toronto, so while I'm in Seattle, I might as well check him out.
Re: video game console.
Ralph...you know that next generation video game consoles are coming out over the next few months. Particularly, XBOX360 is coming out really soon. PS3 and Nintendo Revolution will be out the middle of next year. What that means is that current generation consoles are probably going to be pretty cheap.
So it depends on your budget and the type of games you are going to play. I currently have a GameCube, Xbox, and PSP. I hardly play Xbox (I won it from a conference I went to earlier this year). Nintendo games are fun and PSP is dope because a bunch of new titles are coming out such as Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
If your planning for the future, I'd suggest waiting for the next gen systems. If I were to choose some systems, I'd pick PS3 and Nintendo Revolution. Games will be in High Def so make sure you have the TV to appreciate the quality.
If you're looking for instant gratification, get a current gen system: Gamecube or PS2.
Re: VOB to DVD on Mac.
I haven't worked with video editing on Macs that much...so my knowledge on the topic is as good as a google search...so I'd just recommend looking it up...sorry man.
Have a good weekend everyone!

Bill Gates
Oh yeah, you would've liked to be at the Humanities Theatre when Bill Gates came to speak at UW.
He talked mostly about what software will be able to do in the future...no more worrying about multiple email addresses and constantly changing phone numbers...portable information available at your fingertips...smart filtering so that email and phone calls will be sorted according to priority...instant and reliable translation between languages.
He also demo'ed the XBOX 360 and showed us this cool tabletop computer where the input to the machine is a webcam and the output/display is a projector. The main machine is a simple cellphone which links up to the tabletop computer.
The look on Mike Lazaridis's face was priceless when Bill Gates showed off the Motorola Q.

weekend
I had a fairly good weekend. A co-worker of mine held a party at his house. His house is actually kinda cool. It has a real bar on the top floor. It's like a mini-club up there. He also bought an air hockey table just for the party.
The party was filled with a bunch of geeks basically. Nerds from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google had circles of interesting conversations about connection protocols and Canadians...yeah I heard some Canadian jokes, but it's so easy to come back and talk about how Americans like to shoot themselves.
Interestingly enough, there was one circle that actually had a pipe and some narcotic being smoked. Of course I wasn't in that circle. I'm quickly becoming notorious for my no alcohol, no smoking, no coffee policy.
The main reason why my friend was having a party was because his landlord wants to tear down his house to build a condo. I know it sounds weird, "my landlord is tearing down my house, let's party". Actually it makes more sense now that I think of it.
Today, Nintendo came by Amazon to give a demo of their new products and game lineup. They demo'd Mario Kart DS and its wireless capabilities. I'm a huge fan of Mario Kart and it looks great on the DS. They also showed the Gameboy Micro. I originally wanted it, but I have a PSP and I don't want to care about another game system unless I get all the games for free. The last thing they showed was Mario Strikers, the soccer game for GameCube. That game's so dope...I'd consider getting that one.
At work, I feel like a massive code monkey. I'm churning out as much code as my fingers can type. It's busy and I'm starting to have dreams of coding...

Re: Green Lantern
VOB files don't play on DVD players because DVD players are expecting the DVD format, not raw files. Although VOB files are from a DVD recorder, they need to be organized on the disc according to the DVD spec.
The easiest way to do this is to use a burning program like Nero
A good program to convert VOB files or any files to mpg is Tmpgenc. I use this program all the time. It's incredible.

Re: New place
Congrats on your success Lawrence...
In terms of Amazon, you don't need Java experience. This is the same with most companies. Most companies are language independent.
They're looking for smart people with top notch problem solving skills. Some have point systems and add up your score at the end...
You have a lot of experience with accomplishments, so I'm sure you'll be all good.

New place
The new place looks awesome. More and more like Frasier each day.
I'm in Ottawa right now - doing a 3 concert tour. We rocked a small town in Quebec, then played Ottawa, and tonight we're playing in Montreal.
Our CD got nominated for two awards. The awards show is next week.
I've got job interviews starting up. If I don't have Java experience, would Amazon still look at my application?

settled in
I moved into my new apartment over the weekend. I'll miss corporate housing. I'll miss how the fully furnished two bedroom apartment and the maid cleaning my place.
The view was also not bad.
In any case, corporate housing is only temporary. I packed my stuff over a month ago and I totally forgot what I packed. I had 37 items compared to my roommates 7.
I spent most of the weekend unpacking and organizing. I just got my new dope ass desk, internet, and digital TV. It feels good that I'm settling. My apartment has potential to be nice. It's spacious, we just need to fill it with nice stuff. It also has a good view out of the living room.
Work is the same old. We're working hard, cranking out lots of code daily...you know...regular geek stuff.
I've been working out fairly often and dancin occasionally. I'm thinking of teaching again and/or joining a local group.
Outside of work and moving, I haven't been doing too much. I expect that to turn around since I'm settled...

Outside of work and moving, I haven't been doing too much. I expect that to turn around since I'm settled...

Google and Yahoo
There's been a lot of news lately about Google and Yahoo and their efforts in digitizing all books. Google has been criticized for copyright infringement. Yahoo is only scanning public domain books.
What's lost in all this is Amazon. For example we have Bill Clinton's book among many thousands more. We've been doing this for years, but we're being taken for granted. We're actually the leader in this field, but we're not in the headlines. Although I'm on the team responsible for this, it doesn't really matter to me. As long as we blaze the trail and maintain leadership, I can live without the press.
I haven't heard any feedback on the store, but I'm moving forward with it anyway. I've started planning with Trinity Graphics. I'll be busy with my move, but I should be able to get some work done.
