Banquet Hall Search - Week 2

I didn't realize how hard it would be to find a location for the wedding. I've called almost every single place in Toronto and it's been crazy, either too expensive, ugly or not available.

This is probably the toughest part of planning a wedding, getting a venue! I really wish Ray was here with me though, it is difficult to drive out to all these places, then have to report what they tell me to Ray. I know it is just as hard for Ray too, he has to listen to all my explanations and his only tool of getting a sense of how these places look like is through pictures from their websites or pictures that I have taken.

I also haven't been feeling 100% so taking care of myself on top of this search hasn't been easy.

wedding planning

As you know, Dy and I are getting married. We haven't confirmed a date yet, but it's close enough that planning has started. I have indirectly experienced this since my sisters were married in consecutive years. Currently, we're handling probably the two most difficult tasks: finding the right reception hall and coming up with a guest list. Dylan and I will be updating this blog with our experiences. All blogs will be filed under the 'wedding' category.

You made it!

I just did my last post on my old journal.

I've pasted it below for nostalgic purposes.
I'm moving...not to a different country, but to a different webhost. I've served four years at my current host and its technologies have not improved much, but its prices have stayed the same. That's a formula for breakup.

That's not all I'm moving. I'm moving my journal from this crappy code to Wordpress. When I first started this journal four years ago, my intention was that this would be a practice ground for me. I got a lot of practice from school and work so development on this playground was minimal. Further, what I was intending to practice was already developed. I've found other things to spend my time on.

I've migrated all of my (our) journal entries to the site already, but I have not updated its default presentation. It's kinda crazy looking back at all of the entries. Looking back is actually possible! There were also about 500 different usernames. You can find the new journal here:
http://s165975999.onlinehome.us/raym/ http://raym.ca

Of course the design is not there and neither is the domain. That will change over the next few weeks.

So this is the last post here...sniff..sniff...I smell crap.

Wordpress is good so far. It's flexible and easy to maintain.

Today I'm going to "A Canadian Universities alumni reception". It's a reception for alumni working in the Pacific Northwest. You need to register for this event and did so weeks ago. Unfortunately, I did figure out if anyone I know registered, so this might be a flying solo event for me. Regardless, it should be interesting.

vacation update

There were 15 people in our house from the whirlwind called Melissa's wedding. If you haven't noticed, pictures from the wedding can be found in the gallery. The event was a success. I'm a wedding vet. My eldest sister, Eileen, was married just 10 months ago. Hard work and smart planning always makes these events run smoothly. When you have 13 girls in the house, you know there's going to be a mad panic in the morning. Ceremony went well, so did the pictures after the ceremony. Here are a few of my favourite pictures.

Jason's cousin Tyrone has a really tall girlfriend. I have an average sized one. This is what it looks like when you put them together.

This is a cute picture of my new brother-in-law and my cousin.

This is another nice shot of my sister wearing her husband's coat.

Dylan likes this picture because Charlene (on the far right) looks like a giant because she's jumping high. My cousins think that I look like I'm levitating.

back home!

Seattle's nice and all, but Toronto is where Dylan, my family, and friends are. I'm back in canuck town for my sister's wedding this weekend. I had a rehearsal to go to today, but my flight was delayed two hours so I had to go straight to the rehearsal from the airport.

Anyways, this is my vacation and I'm already enjoying it.

Bigshot media

You guys remember that videoshoot Geoff, Joe, and I did last year? Me neither.

You can actually buy some of those clips at Big Shot media. You just have to search for "dance" or "Breakdance". I've put up a sample in the album. Click the link below.

Questions

No. 1
I got a wedding video. I want to change the introduction music coz it sucks. Is there a device that I could use to do that? Can I use my NET MD?

No.2
Origianl VHS
I am planning to add more additional footage on the video before transferring to DVD. Is it better to make an edited VHS first?

If I was Ray: I would be hurt. Imagine one of your friends was dissing your site. I would never say things against my friends. Oh well, I scored again.

I'm bad at responding to these messages....

First of all Geek, she's still in high school. Second of all, shut up. No matter how smart you are, you still look for other people's opinions when shopping. I'm sure you didn't buy your pocket protector without coming to this site to see if I had the same one.

Re: Mobiblu

There are many, many, many mp3 players on the market. The Mobiblu has an interesting form factor. I haven't taken a deep look into the product, but from the specs, it has decent battery life of 15 hours which is just a little more than my old Iriver h120 which is 20GB. Navigation looks decent, but the main reason to get this thing is its size. If you have bad eyes though, it's probably not a good idea.

My main problem with all flash based players is capacity. This one maxes out at 2GB which is not nearly enough for me. I do not like syncing my player with my computer that much. I just like to dump everything at one time. One other possible negative point is the custom USB cable. You need to bring this around with you if you want to transfer files. You can't just pick up a standard cable and transfer files.

This wasn't a great review, but a decent high level 2 minute look. Hope that helps bro....looking for a birthday present?

Selling this site

I was contacted by a venture capitalist and he made me an offer to buy this site and its ideas. That was very strange to me because I was just thinking of how crazy and silly this site has become. He likes the idea of visitor-driven sites. He wants to keep the essence of the site, but expand it into a more scalable social network. He wants to add interactive ajax-style chats to each of the posts so you can chat in realtime about any of the posts directly on the page. We were discussing some really cool, but secret ideas. If the deal goes through, perhaps you'll see them on this site soon. He actually said he was disappointed at my update frequency. I did not disagree. He's flying into Seattle today to talk about it. We'll see how that goes.

Front and Center

If you like having everybody add to your blog front and center, maybe you could control it so that it doesn't get posted until you approve it.

Why it has been so quiet

I haven't posted much lately. I was starting to rethink the purpose of this site. A lot of the stuff that goes on here can be embarassing. If you google Raymond Mendoza or A9 raymond mendoza, you get this page. Every comment on this page has been indexed by many search engines. Do I want to be known for such nonsense? No. Besides the fact that not many people enter "Raymond Mendoza" as a search query, the fact that if they do, they'll find this still bugs me.

I thought about it for a while. There aren't many places on the net where visitors' comments are placed front and center. I don't want to take that away. Instead, I should try and control the content. How I do that is voodoo to me.

Anyways, today, I visited the student I'm mentoring for the Technology Access Foundation. The visit was actually different because I went to watch him at his basketball tournament. He happens to be filipino and he's in an asian basketball league. It reminded me very much of my fil-act and FNAHC basketball days. He's a great kid. He's intelligent and communicates well. It doesn't seem like he needs much help from me. His parents, whom I met today also, seem to be doing a great job. All I can be is a friend who has a lot of experience making bad decisions with a few good ones sprinkled in there.

Good or Bad

STORY: I was once sent to hell so that I could replace Satan’s throne. Yah it was an opportunity for me but all i have to do is teach a few mini horned people things that could alter ones state of mind and being. I did get bored until one day i looked up and saw this young lady walking ontop of me. I said "isn’t this girl gonna join me so that i could have a queen beside me"...Not even a soul answered me that day. It made me realize that no matter how bad or evil can one be, that when an angel passes by every ounce of that temptation will turn just vanish into thin air. That day i left hell and WANTED™ to be alive.

Two Turtles

I felt like posting something a little different for everybody ...
to lighten up all the tension...

Two Turtles

Two turtles go camping and pack a cooler with sandwiches and beer. After three days of walking, they arrive at a great spot but realize they've forgotten a bottle opener. The first turtle turns to the second and says, "You've gotta go back and get the opener or else we have no beer."

"No way," says the second. "By the time I get back, you will have eaten all the food."

"I promise I won't," says the turtle. "Just hurry!"

Six full days pass and there's still no sign of the second turtle. But the first turtle reminds himself, a promise is a promise. Another couple of days pass, but the turtle again reminds himself a promise is a promise. Finally after 10 full days of waiting exasperated and starving, the first turtle can't take it anymore and decides to open up a sandwhich. Suddenly, the second turtle pops out from behind a rock and yells, "I knew it! I'm not fu@king going!"

Re: Hypothetical

I have the perfect solution...
You can take the money and i'll comunicate with Dy for you!!!...
10 million is a lot...me and Dy can spend some of that money while we go out for 5 years then you won't feel so bad ....
because everytime we spend the money...
we'll think of the huge sacrifice you made for a better life with Dy!!!
all the hugging and kissing, don't worry ray....it's just a small sacrifice I have to make for 5 years...I got your back brother!!!! lol

That's very disrespectful. Although I encourage people to post their opinions, all I really ask for is to show respect. If you disagree with something, let them know, but back it up with substance and respect.

Re: hypothetical

I don't want to step on any toes, but I will give you my honest opinion.

Relationships are all about communication. Not communicating for 5 years is essentially ending a relationship. The only way to make a better future for a couple is to build it together. Therefore, taking the money would be counter productive.

hypothetical

Do you mean to say that even if you said "yes" to the hypothetical situation, Dy would break up with you? The reason why I ask is because my boyfriend of 2 years said yes he would take the money with the intention of making a better future for us both... and he even went on to justify his answer even further. So does this mean I'm not worth 10 million to him? Also, am I being irrational for being offended by his answer?

Re: just a hypothetical situation:

That's actually an easy question, although it took me two days to respond. You're basically asking me to end a relationship for $10 million. No one in their right mind would go back to a person she hasn't talked to for 5 years for money. Even I said 'yes' to this hypothetical situation, the relationship would end. So the answer is obvious.

I haven't got a question like that before.

just a hypothetical situation:

this is just a hypothetical situation, but i would like to know what you would do in this case....

would you give up seeing amd talking to Dy for 5 straight years, if you were given 10 million dollars right now? on the one hand, it's a lot of money and there is so much you could do with that. and on the other hand, you wouldn't be able to see or talk to your girlfriend for 5 years. it's a stupid question, i know, but really it's a good indicator of how you prioritize the value of money, time, and love.

Ash Wednesday

Today is/was Ash Wednesday. It marks the first day of Lent and 40 days of fasting and repentance. Today's service was different than what I'm used to. Today, the priest put holy water in the ashes to create a more sticky paste to put on your forehead. Another thing that's different here is that we read the Nicene creed, but in the Missal it says, "Read the Apostle's creed if this is a children's mass". ha....

Dy and i have decided to give up all junk food for lent. My main vices are gummy bears and cookies, so this will be a challenge for me. Hope you all are giving something up too. The priest said that Lent is not supposed to feel like any other time. That's one of the reasons why we fast and give something up. We're supposed to feel the pinch of Lent.

Gmail

Gmail hasn't been that reliable lately. I've been getting a lot of "Oops! The system was not able to perform that operation" messages. Maybe they're having problems integrating their Calendar program in the background.

Gmail uses AJAX (Asynchonous Javascript and XML). It's a technology that I'm starting to pick up now. So expect to see some new things in the future.

It's Judgement day for RIM tomorrow. As you may recall, I worked for RIM a couple of years ago. I had a great time there and I was strongly considering working there fultime except that it had one fatal flaw. It was in Waterloo. So instead I moved to Seattle. Anyways, I really can't see RIM going down. It's a technology that's tattooed to our thumbs. It would be like Apple suing Windows for all of the things Microsoft stole from MacOS. There would still be a Windows OS the next day...with or without a "workaround". My prediction is that the injuntion will be lifted and NTP will file for an appeal and then a "terrorist" will destroy NTPs records which will ultimately end the dispute (Hopefully my site doesn't get audited from Homeland Security for that one).

SO BORED..I COULD DIE

Three Ugly Filipinos

By: Anonymous

There were these 3 Filipino girls, and they were the ugliest Filipino girls ever! They finally got so tired of being ugly that they decide to go to the doctor's for help. The doctor looks at them and says, "Well, this is a tough one, but this is what you have to do; jump into a river and say the name of someone you think is beautiful and you will look exactly like that person."

So the first one goes and says "Eva Longoria" and when she gets out of the water she looked just like Eva Longoria.

Then the second one went and she said "Jessica Alba" and became Jessia Alba.

Then came the third one... When she jumped into the river (being so terrified of swimming) she slipped and said "AY TA-E!" (means shit)

In the news

A lot of friends and family ask me what I do actually. I always say, "Software Engineer", which is not granlar enough for most. It's tricky because most of the stuff I do is secret and I'm paranoid about disclosing informatioin that could get me trouble.

Information about projects I'm working on at Amazon are starting to hit the net. The stuff we're doing this year is the reason why I wouldn't want to be with any other company. That's all I'm legally allowed to say. Here are a few links about some of the geeky things I'm doing at Amazon.

Bible readings

This year, I started doing daily bible readings. I googled and subscribed to the first one I saw. Apparently if you keep up with the daily readings, you can read the entire bible in a year. That averages out to about 3 chapters a day. The problem isn't the length of the readings, the problem is that it's the King James version. It's like reading shakespeare all over again. In any case, it's a good idea to read the bible everyday. We often lose touch with our religion between Sundays ... or Christmases in some cases. Here's the link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bible-Reading/

Chatting

I forward all of my mail to my gmail account. The main reason why I do that is because you can create different accounts from which you can send. For example, I receive all my raym mail in my gmail account, but I send email as raym. The interface is a lot faster than others...especially hotmail. My hotmail account is my spam account. I just use it when I register for sites....Now google has chatting right in the email interface. I wouldn't mind giving up msn messenger if my friends did. Check it out:

BTW, I think I brought a volleyball video back from Toronto. I'll have to check.

Glen

Glen said i don't update this site enough. So now I will update this journal at least once a day.

You know working at an office all day is actually good for your health and fitness. Yeah that's right...right for me at least. I spend all day in front of a damn computer writing algorithms and solving problems. So when I get home, I just want to run around. Luckily, my apartment has a fitness center that I can waste my energy on. There's also a kickboxing place beside my apartment so if I choose, I can get my butt whipped after work.

superbowl

It's unfortunate that Seattle lost in the superbowl. They were outplaying the Steelers the entire game, but championships are usually about a few big plays and the Steelers made all of them. Congrats to them.

I went to my friend Paul's housewarming party yesterday. He is one of the first of my friends to throw down the money and buy some property. He said he was inspired from a gospel reading from Church. It was the one about investment. The master gives three servants equal shares of money. Two of them invest and make money while the other one burries the money until the master returns. The master praises the two investors, but rebukes the other. So apparently Paul doesn't like getting rebuked.

So how are my projects going?

OUCH: I've gotten a decent response from schools across Washington. I'm thinking of making it into a larger event. Perhaps I'll bring in a hip hop artist to headline the event. I'm still in the planning stages since my real job has got me using my brain a little bit more lately. I'm still on schedule though.

HOMELESS Foundation: The plans for this might be pushed into the Spring. The reason for this is that I found another mentoring opportunity with the Technology Access Foundation (TAF). As you might recall, I wanted to be a mentor, but the previous opportunity (Community for Youth) didn't sit well with my schedule. This one does and it also deals with my profession. The main difference between TAF and Community for Youth is that TAF's students are exceptional, while Community for Youth's students go to underpriviledged schools. I sorta feel bad not mentoring for the more needy, but I think TAF will provide a good first shot at volunteering and mentoring.

SUPERSKILLZ WAS NOT SKILLED ENOUGH...AHUH

SUPERSKILLZ WASN'T REALLY A GREAT SHOW. HONESTLY, I FELT ASLEEP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SHOW....CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? WHAT A BORING SHOW.

Press coverage

One of the projects I'm working on got a little bit of press coverage. They aren't official press releases, only speculation. I'm legally not allowed to comment on it, but here are some links.

Amazon to offer video downloads soon?

Amazon.com bringing video downloads in April?

Amazon Post Holiday Party

Instead of going to Superskillz in toronto, I went to my company's post holiday party. You see, Christmas is a busy time for Amazon. We sold over 110 million items over the holiday season and there are a lot of systems that need to be kept up. That's why we celebrate after Christmas is over.

This year's theme was Vegas. They had a bunch of gambling tables which included black jack, 5 card stud, craps, and some others. They even had a wedding chapel where 5 couples got married. I'm not sure I would want to get married at a company party...unless my only friends were people who worked with me, then it's like a free wedding.

The party was huge, there were over a thousand people there. The gambling tables were packed so I waited till it died down a bit. I doubled my "money" in twenty minutes at the blackjack table. I said "money" because they gave us fake money to use towards raffle tickets. I never win those so I won't mention the nice prizes. I had a good time. It was my first company party. It looks like the company put a lot into it.
