Re: Guessing Game
hmmm... where did this come from?
I know glen and geoff's GPA, but I'm not too sure about Lawrence and Jeff's.
Re: Volleyball
I started every except in my first year on the senior team.
I'll be heading back to Toronto on Friday. It will be my first trip back to Canada in four months. It feels like I'm coming home from an internship, except I have to come back.

Re: Are you for Real?
Lots of people need help.
I've never lived in a downtown of a city before and I never realized how big the community of homeless people in Seattle actually is. I'm sure it's the same in any city, including Toronto.
The reason why I chose homeless people over any other needy cause is that I see homeless people all the time. I think I'll be more effective when I'm close to the source.

hey raym. I am not opposing your project on helping the homeless, but don't you think it would be nice if you start helping those poor kids around the world, abandoned by their parents.

Projects
I have three projects lined up for the start of 2006. One project will be bringing OUCH to Seattle. For those that don't know, OUCH is a hip hop dance competition for universities that I started in Waterloo (of course I didn't do it alone, I had UW Hip Hop's help). My target date for the competition is late March.
Another project that I'm looking to do is open up a foundation for the homeless in Seattle. I have a particular idea to raise money for the homeless, but I'll keep that a secret until I execute.
A third project will be a joint venture with Trinity Graphics. I have always wanted to be part of a graphics/printing business and I want to see what kind of cool stuff we can come up with.
My main project since moving to Seattle was, "project work". I know the name sounds complicated, but all it means is that I wanted to focus on work and establish myself as an engineer that belongs (yeah they call us engineers). I've hit most of my goals on my current project, so I'm looking forward to doing better at work and also execute on the aforementioned projects.
Oh yeah, my fourth project is to decipher the message below ("Me The Best Spiker")

New Media Gallery
I added a new Media Gallery. Unfortunately, it only has one album in it. At least it's a new one. It's from when Dy and I went to Varadero last summer.
I'll be adding more content as I figure out how to migrate my old stuff into here.
You can register as a user and add comments! Eventually, that authentication system will be integrated into the journal entries...

media gallery
I am almost finished with a new media gallery. It's a ton better than the existing one and it will be up by this weekend. My current problem is migrating the existing media gallery to the new one.

Meanie! =(
For the record, we all put forth great efforts toward originality, variety, and difficulty. I think that's what we had that other groups didn't. Except for a couple key moves (for crowd familiarity purposes), the rest was indeed authentic. I honestly think that UW was the most original team out there. I think many people thought so too. But hey, you don't have to agree with the majority.
Hmm, I really don't see how we could have biased the judges. It's not like we met them before. We all believed we were viewed as the underdogs this year. Winning was a huge and pleasant surprise. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the show.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hey Ray, we all wanted to make you proud! As soon as we heard the announcement, we knew we had to tell you ASAP! This one goes out to you, man! We sure do miss you!
PS. Any input for next year?

Re: OUCH
Yeah that's awesome guys.
I saw a practice vid, you guys look good.
I see that this year, the numbers of competitors were reduced. Like I said before, there's no chance of winning with the amount of people we had in previous years.
In any case, that's really good news. It got me hyped up...A few weeks ago, I was thinking of starting an OUCH-like competition in Washingtion.

Dy and I met successfully in California. Dy looks cute.
Anyway, there's sun here! Seattle has been generally overcast the last few weeks. I forgot how to use my sunglasses.
Looks like this weekend will be full of eating as all vacations should be. We'll be hitting the fitness rooms, basketball courts, and dance studios hard next week.

back to cali
Dy and I will be meeting in Los Angeles to celebrate American Thanksgiving. Actually, we're just going on vacation. I'm actually really excited because we haven't seen each other for a while.
I'm not sure when my site is going to be migrated, but I'm sure it will happen when I can't do anything about it.
What that basically means is that there may be an outage over the next couple of days.

outage
There may be an outage of this site over the weekend. I'm migrating the site to a newer server....
That's just FYI...
I went to a mentor orientation meeting today. I'm looking for a way to give back to the community. Becoming a mentor to a high school freshman sounds like a good option. High school is such a defining point in life. Many people are just grown up versions of their high school selves. Life after high school is just an extension of high school. We encounter the same relationships, assholes, embarrasments, and accomplishments. It's just in a different context. I've discussed this before to no end...Anyways, I think I have a little bit of experience that could help..

I've discussed this before to no end...Anyways, I think I have a little bit of experience that could help..

mmm hmm
The Roots were good. They provided the incredible sound and all round performance, but Scratch or Rahzel weren't there. Rahzel hasn't toured with them since 2001 or something, but those guys add a unique dimension to the performance that was obviously lacking.
Today marks the day that Dy and I have been together for 7 years 5 months. They did this study on rabbits to figure out the upper limit on how many items they can distinguish. Apparently, rabbits can see up to 8 things before thinking it's too much to count. Is 7 years, 5 months too much to count? haha ... just joking.
Next week is US Thanksgiving where Dy and I will meet in LA. I'm excited about that!
One of the things that I find interesting is the competition which has been forming between Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo in the digital text(books) market. The next few quarters will be interesting, but I'm glad I'm with Amazon.
Speaking of Amazon, we released a beta version of mechanical turk. My roommate is actually on the Mechanical Turk team. If you're like me and don't know what Mechanical Turk is, here's a picture:
OK...that doesn't help I know. The picture above is a demonstration of Artifical Artifical intelligence. Huh? Well it's a Chess machine that beat some of the best chess players in the world in the 18th century. The trick to this machine, however, is that a little chess champion was hidden in the box.
Amazon has made it's version of this. It's been slashdotter already, so check it out here: http://www.mturk.com/

The Roots
The Roots are playing tonight in Seattle. I haven't bought tickets yet, so I hope they're not sold out at the door. I've been listening to their most recent album lately and I forgot how good it was. Last time I saw them was at the Kool Haus in Toronto. We waited in line for a long time in the cold. That was a few years ago, so I'm excited to see them again.
We have a spotlight 2k5 DVD actually. I don't have a copy for myself though...I can put some clips online

experience
I've been in quite a few meetings with Vice Presidents of Amazon. You can really tell why they are VPs. They're heads and shoulders above everyone else in the room. I'm not talking about ego. I'm talking about intelligence. I think I'm in a good position to learn from a lot of really smart people...
My sister and her fiance, Jason, visited me in Seattle over the weekend. We had a good time. I showed them around Amazon, took them to our company store, we went to a halloween party, and ate some really good food. I think they like my place, but it's missing something.....furniture! As you recall from my pictures, all we have are a couple of chairs and trays. We are in dire need of a couch...so if you feel like donating something and shipping it to Seattle, let me know.
The Roots are coming to Seattle next Thursday...I'm highly considering going. A few months ago, we made up a routine to one of their songs. We didn't get to do the routine due to uncontrollable circumstances..ahem...so perhaps I'll be a loser and do it while I'm watching...

Sage Francis
I went to go see Sage Francis last night. Sage Francis is an underground rapper with incredible lyrics. He actually said "underground" or "indie" is a misnomer. What it really means is "minor league". That is, the artist isn't selling enough units.
He's also white. The event reminded me of a Dave Chappelle episode. Lots of white people who dance and act like the people in the Chappelle show.
Anyway, I arrived too early. I had to endure a long set of mediocre opening acts. They were OK, but I thought it was a little weird seeing a dude perform who looks like one of my professors from Waterloo.
The main event was entertaining, but the opening acts kinda killed the night a bit.
Sage Francis' lyrics were dope and his delivery was tight. Besides that he also joked around a lot. For example, he danced like a dooofus. Right click to download
Also, a dude came to the side of the stage, interrupted Sage, and begged Sage to autograph a sign. The dude was being annoying, so Sage took the sign and ate it. Actually, he just chewed up the sign, drank some water with the sign in his mouth, then spit it back at the dude. It sounds a little harsh, but it was good for the entertainment value.
Near the end of his set, he did a parody song. It was called "I like 99 rappers but Jay-Z ain't one". I took a video with my digi cam. It's horrible quality, but at least it's something.Right click to download

Convenant Awards
Exciting news...my band won a Convenant Award for Best Rock Album of the Year. My friend Nasri won too for best Hip Hop Song of the year but he wasn't there to accept the award. Lots of technical glitches throughout the show. Would have looked really ghetto on television so I'm glad it wasn't televised. There were a lot of good acts.

my place
I put up some pictures of my new place. You can check them out in the Pics section. I put them there for my family and friends to see. I'm not sure it's a good idea to post pictures of my place to the world, but I've done it before and all I've gotten was "you have a messy room".
Tonight, I'm going to see Sage Francis perform. He's a dope underground MC. I don't know if he's ever came to Toronto, so while I'm in Seattle, I might as well check him out.
Re: video game console.
Ralph...you know that next generation video game consoles are coming out over the next few months. Particularly, XBOX360 is coming out really soon. PS3 and Nintendo Revolution will be out the middle of next year. What that means is that current generation consoles are probably going to be pretty cheap.
So it depends on your budget and the type of games you are going to play. I currently have a GameCube, Xbox, and PSP. I hardly play Xbox (I won it from a conference I went to earlier this year). Nintendo games are fun and PSP is dope because a bunch of new titles are coming out such as Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories.
If your planning for the future, I'd suggest waiting for the next gen systems. If I were to choose some systems, I'd pick PS3 and Nintendo Revolution. Games will be in High Def so make sure you have the TV to appreciate the quality.
If you're looking for instant gratification, get a current gen system: Gamecube or PS2.
Re: VOB to DVD on Mac.
I haven't worked with video editing on Macs that much...so my knowledge on the topic is as good as a google search...so I'd just recommend looking it up...sorry man.
Have a good weekend everyone!

Bill Gates
Oh yeah, you would've liked to be at the Humanities Theatre when Bill Gates came to speak at UW.
He talked mostly about what software will be able to do in the future...no more worrying about multiple email addresses and constantly changing phone numbers...portable information available at your fingertips...smart filtering so that email and phone calls will be sorted according to priority...instant and reliable translation between languages.
He also demo'ed the XBOX 360 and showed us this cool tabletop computer where the input to the machine is a webcam and the output/display is a projector. The main machine is a simple cellphone which links up to the tabletop computer.
The look on Mike Lazaridis's face was priceless when Bill Gates showed off the Motorola Q.

weekend
I had a fairly good weekend. A co-worker of mine held a party at his house. His house is actually kinda cool. It has a real bar on the top floor. It's like a mini-club up there. He also bought an air hockey table just for the party.
The party was filled with a bunch of geeks basically. Nerds from Amazon, Microsoft, and Google had circles of interesting conversations about connection protocols and Canadians...yeah I heard some Canadian jokes, but it's so easy to come back and talk about how Americans like to shoot themselves.
Interestingly enough, there was one circle that actually had a pipe and some narcotic being smoked. Of course I wasn't in that circle. I'm quickly becoming notorious for my no alcohol, no smoking, no coffee policy.
The main reason why my friend was having a party was because his landlord wants to tear down his house to build a condo. I know it sounds weird, "my landlord is tearing down my house, let's party". Actually it makes more sense now that I think of it.
Today, Nintendo came by Amazon to give a demo of their new products and game lineup. They demo'd Mario Kart DS and its wireless capabilities. I'm a huge fan of Mario Kart and it looks great on the DS. They also showed the Gameboy Micro. I originally wanted it, but I have a PSP and I don't want to care about another game system unless I get all the games for free. The last thing they showed was Mario Strikers, the soccer game for GameCube. That game's so dope...I'd consider getting that one.
At work, I feel like a massive code monkey. I'm churning out as much code as my fingers can type. It's busy and I'm starting to have dreams of coding...

It's busy and I'm starting to have dreams of coding...
weekend
I had a fairly good weekend. A co-worker of mine held a party at his house. His house is actually kinda cool. It has a real bar on the top floor. It's like a mini-club up there. He also bought an air hockey table just for the party.

Re: Green Lantern
VOB files don't play on DVD players because DVD players are expecting the DVD format, not raw files. Although VOB files are from a DVD recorder, they need to be organized on the disc according to the DVD spec.
The easiest way to do this is to use a burning program like Nero
A good program to convert VOB files or any files to mpg is Tmpgenc. I use this program all the time. It's incredible.

Re: New place
Congrats on your success Lawrence...
In terms of Amazon, you don't need Java experience. This is the same with most companies. Most companies are language independent.
They're looking for smart people with top notch problem solving skills. Some have point systems and add up your score at the end...
You have a lot of experience with accomplishments, so I'm sure you'll be all good.

New place
The new place looks awesome. More and more like Frasier each day.
I'm in Ottawa right now - doing a 3 concert tour. We rocked a small town in Quebec, then played Ottawa, and tonight we're playing in Montreal.
Our CD got nominated for two awards. The awards show is next week.
I've got job interviews starting up. If I don't have Java experience, would Amazon still look at my application?

settled in
I moved into my new apartment over the weekend. I'll miss corporate housing. I'll miss how the fully furnished two bedroom apartment and the maid cleaning my place.
The view was also not bad.
In any case, corporate housing is only temporary. I packed my stuff over a month ago and I totally forgot what I packed. I had 37 items compared to my roommates 7.
I spent most of the weekend unpacking and organizing. I just got my new dope ass desk, internet, and digital TV. It feels good that I'm settling. My apartment has potential to be nice. It's spacious, we just need to fill it with nice stuff. It also has a good view out of the living room.
Work is the same old. We're working hard, cranking out lots of code daily...you know...regular geek stuff.
I've been working out fairly often and dancin occasionally. I'm thinking of teaching again and/or joining a local group.
Outside of work and moving, I haven't been doing too much. I expect that to turn around since I'm settled...

Google and Yahoo
There's been a lot of news lately about Google and Yahoo and their efforts in digitizing all books. Google has been criticized for copyright infringement. Yahoo is only scanning public domain books.
What's lost in all this is Amazon. For example we have Bill Clinton's book among many thousands more. We've been doing this for years, but we're being taken for granted. We're actually the leader in this field, but we're not in the headlines. Although I'm on the team responsible for this, it doesn't really matter to me. As long as we blaze the trail and maintain leadership, I can live without the press.
I haven't heard any feedback on the store, but I'm moving forward with it anyway. I've started planning with Trinity Graphics. I'll be busy with my move, but I should be able to get some work done.

Video Clip
yeah, I saw that clip too. I saw a guy with his finger running back and forth inside the girls mouth.
It's a funny sick joke, don't y'all think.
great editing though...i wish i could turn back the clock.

A store
I was thinking of adding a store to this website. I don't want to be Amazon and I don't want to fill my pockets. I just want to support the businesses of people I know. For example, Dy's brother has a graphic design company called Trinity Graphics. They have shirts with cool designs and nice prints. I don't think it would hurt to help them out.
Also, we can sell 5th Element and Vybe DVDs and clothing.
Perhaps I can sell memorabilia of a couple of guys who seem to be popular ;)
I want to keep the selection small and exclusive.
What's your honest opinion?

Glen
Hi Ray...it's been such a long long time since I've posted anything here. Thank you so much for the birthday greeting, you are always so sweet. Anyways, I just had to comment on that old school picture of the b-boys. I thought that the person in the back, dressed in black was a GIRL!!! Then I read the description and realized it was Glen, too funny!!! It's weird how we don't even realize how much we've all changed.
